When Atlanta podiatrist Dr. Paul A Colon received the news that his mother, Millie Michaels, had Alzheimer’s disease, he set out to provide her with the best possible care. As Mrs. Michaels condition worsened, her level of care progressed from intermittent care to in-home twenty four hour care. Eventually, Mrs. Michaels needed such consistent high level care for her physical needs that she had to be moved into a rehabilitation hospital for a short period of time.
However, during her stay for physical rehabilitation, Mrs. Michaels began to show signs of recovering some of her cognitive skills as a result of socializing with a community of people all day and participating in activities such as recreation therapy. Therefore, when Dr. Colon began looking for post-rehabilitative care for his mother, he searched for facilities that would not only take care of his mother’s physical needs but her social well-being as well. He realized that in-home care was not the best arrangement for his mother, regardless of how well intended.
As a result of his dedication to his mother’s care, Dr. Colon decided to build an assisted living home that offered personal memory care in which his mother would be proud to live. What had begun as a journey to find the best care for his mother transitioned to a learning process and a mission. Dr. Colon visited almost 100 other assisted living facilities, studying which programs engaged Alzheimer’s and dementia residents and what activities enriched their lives by creating community.
The result of Dr. Colon’s mission opened in December 1999, built the way his mother would have wanted it. In fact, Mrs. Michael’s picture hangs in the lobby with the following inscription below her picture: ‘Dedicated to the memory of Millie Michaels and all those who have endured the challenges of memory impairment.’
On behalf of Dr. Colon, the staff at Govenor’s Glenn is proud to provide an excellent facility for senior citizens that suffer from Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other short term memory problems.
